Shrīdhara Smarane – Part 1
By Ms.Vijaya Bhatta & Adya Bhatta, USA
This is an incident from the time when Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji was a student. In the village where Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji and His brother Tryambaka lived, a swarm of flies bred near a well due to sewage water. Those flies were harming an old lady. She called out to Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji and said, “Son! Can You relieve me of the pain caused by these flies?”
Empathizing with the pain of the old lady, Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji thought about a way to relieve her pain. He thought of how Lord Shrī Rāmā, Lord Shrī Krishnā, and other great men had rescued their devotees. To help the old lady in the same way, He started to kill the flies by stomping on them. While killing the flies, He chanted the name of Lord Shrī Rāmā without fail. His brother Tryambaka told Him repeatedly not to kill the flies in this manner. Tryambaka lovingly corrected Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji’s mistake by saying, “If I hit You, You will try to escape. That means You love this body of Yours. Similarly, all living beings love their bodies. When they are dying naturally, if one chants the name of Lord Shrī Rāmā, they will surely attain salvation. But if one kills beings forcefully this way, they will not attain salvation. Not only that, even the path to our own salvation will be blocked.” This transformed the mindset of young Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji entirely. He repented for His action and prayed to the Almighty Lord to be forgiven for this sin. He vowed to never repeat such an act. From that day onwards, Shrī Shrīdhara Swāmīji saw all living beings with compassion.
